Avacharana – Application
Jalauka Avacharana is the application of medicinal leeches to remove impure blood from the body. In Ayurveda, it is classified under Raktamokshana (bloodletting) and is known for its effectiveness in detoxifying the blood and balancing the body’s doshas, particularly Pitta dosha.
How It Works :-
Leeches secrete saliva that contains anticoagulants, anesthetics, and enzymes. When they attach to the skin, they draw blood while simultaneously releasing these compounds, which help improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing.
Procedure of Jalauka Avacharana :-
- Preparation: The area of application is cleansed, and fresh leeches are selected.
Application: Leeches are placed on the affected area, where they attach and begin to draw blood. - Bloodletting Phase: Leeches feed for 30-45 minutes, during which time they draw out impure blood.
- Removal: Once satiated, leeches naturally detach. If needed, turmeric or salt is applied to facilitate removal.
