What is Pottali Sweda ?
Pottali Sweda, also known as Patra Pinda Sweda or Kizhi Therapy, is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment that involves the application of medicated herbal poultices. These poultices, called Pottalis, are filled with a combination of herbs, leaves, powders, or rice, depending on the therapeutic purpose. The poultices are heated in medicated oils and massaged onto the body, inducing sweating (Swedana), relaxing the muscles, relieving pain, and promoting detoxification
Indications :-
Arthritis (Sandhivata)
Low Back Pain (Kati Shoola)
Cervical Spondylosis
Sciatica (Gridhrasi)
Frozen Shoulder (Avabahuka)
Myalgia and Muscle Cramps
Joint Stiffness and Swelling
Sports Injuries and Sprains
Neuromuscular Disorders
Procedure :-
The patient is assessed for their Prakriti (body constitution) and the specific health condition.
Suitable herbs, leaves, or powders are chosen and filled into a clean cloth to form the Pottali (bolus).
The poultices are heated in medicated oil until they reach the desired temperature.
The patient is made to lie comfortably, and warm medicated oil is applied to the affected area to prepare the skin.
The heated Pottalis are massaged over the body using gentle, circular, and tapping motions.
The therapist ensures that the temperature of the poultice is maintained consistently by reheating it periodically.
The massage focuses on the painful and stiff areas, enhancing blood flow and reducing discomfort.
Post-Procedure :-
The patient is allowed to rest for a few minutes to allow the body to absorb the therapeutic effects of the herbs and oils.
Excess oil is wiped off using a warm towel.
The patient is advised to stay warm, avoid cold exposure, and refrain from heavy activities immediately after the session.
