Dhumpana is an Ayurvedic procedure that involves inhalation of medicated herbal smoke. It is a form of herbal smoking therapy aimed at clearing nasal passages, respiratory channels, and balancing the doshas.
The term “Dhupa” means smoke, and “Pana” means inhalation, indicating the therapeutic use of herbal smoke to treat ailments related to the respiratory and head regions.
Mode of action :
- Helps pacify aggravated doshas which are responsible for the respiratory disorders
- The antimicrobial and anti- inflammatory properties that protect and heal the mucosal linings

Procedure :
- The appropriate medicinal herbs as per the individual’s condition is selected
- Then powdered and placed in a dhupa or a similar device for burning
- The patient inhales the mediated smoke through the mouth or nose depending on the condition treated
- Exhalation through mouth ensuring proper flow of smoke.
- Rest is recommended after the procedure to allow the effects of the herbs to manifest
