Upanaha Sweda
Upanaha Sweda is a form of fomentation therapy where warm, medicated herbal pastes are applied externally to provide relief from pain, stiffness, and swelling, the paste is typically medicated with herbs having properties of alleviating pain, inflammation, and stiffness, and it’s useful in treating various Vata and Kapha disorders.
Mode of Action:
- The warmth and specific herbs used in the paste help balance aggravated Vata and Kapha doshas.
- The herbal paste often contains oils or ghee that enhance lubrication and relieve dryness in joints and tissues
- The heat generated helps in sweating and reduces stiffness in the muscles and joints.
- The herbs used have analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties, helping reduce pain and swelling.
- The warmth of the application enhances local blood flow, promoting healing and reducing discomfort.
Procedure:
Preparation of the Herbal Paste and then the warm herbal paste is applied to the affected part of the body.
After applying the paste, the area is covered with leaves or a cloth to keep the heat in.
The area is then gently bandaged to maintain the warmth and secure the paste in place.
The bandage is kept for a specific duration, or for a few hours, depending on the condition being treated.
After the designated time, the bandage is removed, and the paste is wiped off.
