Janu Basti
Janu basti is a form of localized treatment where oil is kept on the knee joint(s) of the body for a prescribed time. For this purpose an artificial pit is made with the use of a dough to which heated oil is poured from a short height. The oil is replaced to maintain optimum temperature throughout the procedure. It is retained for about 45 minutes or longer depending on the condition of the patient and disease. After the procedure the excess oil is removed with the help of cotton and the remaining oil is massaged into the joint in circular motion. This process is repeated on subsequent days until the patient is cured of the disease.
Mode of action :
The lukewarm oil will increase the temperature by which vasodilation will occur and the blood circulation will increase and necessary oxygen and nutrition materials are supplied and the free radicals which are responsible for the disease will be removed .
Procedure
Procedure can be carried out in four positions, they are:-
● Supine position
● Prone position (where the patient lies on his tummy.)
● Medial part of the knee
● Lateral part of the knee
After the procedure the involved part may be given fomentation with the help of a hot towel.
