Basti Chikitsa
Basti Chikitsa is considered to be the prime modality of treatment of a wide range of diseases. In Basti karma the drugs are administered through the anal route where it stays for some time and then drains out Mala i.e., toxins and body waste from all over the body into the colon. This is then eliminated by peristaltic movements resulting in desired effect. c

Mode of Action
Colon, being the site of action, offers near-neutral pH, long contact time, lesser enzymatic activity, and increased responsiveness to drugs.
There are over 500 million neurons present in the gut acting as the second brain. This Basti may stimulate our central nervous system by acting on these neurons in the gut thereby bringing a positive effect on the higher mental functions as well.

Poorvakarma
- Selection of patient

- Preparation of patient – Oiling & Massage is done and the patient is made to wait in the
left lateral position.
Pradhan Karma
- Bed for Basti- medium height bed with a foot rest.
- Time of administration- afternoon, after digestion of the previous meal when the patient is
not hungry. - Filling of Basti medicines
