Lepana
Lepana is an Ayurvedic procedure where a medicated paste is applied externally to the body to treat localized disorders such as pain, inflammation, swelling, or skin diseases.
Mode of Action:
- Pacification of Doshas: Depending on the herbs used, Lepana can help balance aggravated doshas, especially Pitta (for inflammation) and Vata (for pain).
- Cooling or Heating Effect: The temperature of the paste (hot or cold) is chosen based on the condition. Cooling pastes help in Pitta-related disorders, while warming pastes are used for Vata and Kapha conditions.
- Local Absorption: The herbs in the paste get absorbed through the skin, exerting anti-inflammatory, analgesic, or detoxifying effects at the site
- Reduction of swelling and pain with improved blood circulation
Procedure :
- Herbs are chosen based on the condition.
- The selected herbs are ground into a powder and mixed with an appropriate liquid to form a smooth paste.
- Sometimes additional medicaments are also added
- The paste is applied in a thick layer over the affected area.
- Once the paste dries or after the designated time, it is gently wiped off or washed.
- The procedure can be repeated daily or as per the physician’s advice until the symptoms improve
