Swedana

What is Swedana ?

Swedana is a classical Ayurvedic treatment that involves inducing sweat using steam or heat therapy. The word “Swedana” comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Sweda,’ meaning sweat. This therapy is designed to open up the channels of the body (Srotas), eliminate toxins, and alleviate stiffness and pain by promoting perspiration. Swedana is often used as a preparatory procedure for detoxification therapies like Panchakarma but can also be a standalone treatment for pain relief and relaxation.”

Indications :-

Joint Pain and Arthritis (Sandhivata)
Muscle Stiffness and Myalgia
Cervical and Lumbar Spondylosis
Sciatica (Gridhrasi)
Frozen Shoulder (Avabahuka)
Obesity and Weight Management
Detoxification and Panchakarma Preparation
Respiratory Disorders (e.g., cold, cough, asthma)
Digestive Issues (e.g., indigestion, bloating)
Stress, Fatigue, and Insomnia

Procedure :-

The patient’s Prakriti (body constitution) and specific health conditions are assessed.
The body is prepared with a light oil massage (Abhyanga) using medicated oils
Herbal decoctions or steam mixtures are prepared based on the patient’s needs
The patient is made to sit or lie comfortably in a steam chamber or on a massage table.
The herbal steam is applied either to the whole body (in Bashpa Sweda) or locally (in Nadi Sweda), focusing on the affected area.
The steam temperature is carefully monitored to ensure comfort and prevent burns.
The therapy typically lasts until the patient starts sweating profusely and feels relaxed.
The heat penetrates deep into the tissues, promoting sweating, detoxification, and muscle relaxation.

Post-Procedure Care :-

The patient is allowed to rest for a few minutes in a warm environment.
Excess oil and sweat are wiped off gently with a warm towel.
The patient is advised to avoid exposure to cold, heavy meals, and strenuous activities for a few hours after the therapy.
